Thomas Holroyd is a founder, BSL interpreter, and director of The Interpreter Initiative, a business built around one core belief — that communication should never be a barrier to opportunity. Alongside running his SME, he works as a self-employed interpreter and serves as a trustee of a national regulatory body, contributing to the wider standards and development of the interpreting profession in the UK.
His work is rooted in access, inclusion, and the quiet but powerful importance of being understood.
But Thomas’s journey didn’t begin in leadership or business. It began with limitation.
At 15, he was living in a static caravan and being told by teachers that academic success wasn’t something he was likely to achieve. For many, that kind of message becomes a boundary. For Thomas, it became a challenge.
Instead of accepting that narrative, he began building something different.
He started small, working one afternoon a week from a Starbucks, slowly turning early experience, industry knowledge, and persistence into a business that now spans multiple services across the interpreting and accessibility sector. What began as a single idea has grown into a company generating over £400,000 in turnover, built steadily through consistency rather than shortcuts.

Alongside running his business, Thomas has continued to deepen his expertise in the field, working as a trustee and preparing to begin an Executive MBA. For him, growth is not just about scaling a company, but about strengthening the systems, processes, and impact behind it.
