Katie Brown is a recent film school graduate, set designer, and emerging creative whose journey reflects both the excitement and the reality of entering today’s film industry.
She has already achieved early recognition for her work, writing and directing a short film that has gone on to screen internationally, earning a Royal Television Society award and most recently an award from the Athens International Film Festival. Alongside this, she has continued to push her work into the world -showcasing her film at events in Manchester and screening at independent festivals in New York.
But behind these milestones sits a much bigger story.
Katie is currently navigating one of the most difficult stages for any young creative: trying to secure long-term work in an industry that often feels closed off, highly competitive, and heavily dependent on existing networks. Despite strong academic and creative success, she speaks openly about the challenge of translating education and early achievements into stable industry opportunities.
Breaking in has never been simple, but for many emerging filmmakers today, it can feel increasingly inaccessible. With unpaid opportunities, lengthy application processes, and limited feedback often becoming the norm, particularly for those without established connections. Katie is especially interested in how this impacts younger creatives who entered the industry during and after the 2020 lockdown period, where building in-person relationships and networks became even more difficult.
She draws influence from filmmakers like Charlotte Wells, whose debut feature Aftersun achieved global recognition and critical acclaim, and from writers and creators like Alice Oseman, whose journey from webcomic to widely celebrated screen adaptation demonstrates the power of authentic storytelling and representation.
For Katie, storytelling is about realism, emotion, and relatability. Particularly in how younger generations navigate identity, connection, and lived experience. At her core, she is a creative committed to her craft, even in uncertain circumstances.
