From Surviving Life to Living with Presence: Joe Loney on Finding Peace Beyond the Mind
In his Legacy Bench conversation, Joe Loney shares the extraordinary journey that led him to discover a truth that now shapes both his life and his work: lasting peace is not found by changing our circumstances, but by changing our relationship with our minds.
But his story is about more than resilience.
It is about what happens when everything we rely upon is stripped away, and how even life’s greatest challenges can become the doorway to a completely different way of living.
Joe’s journey has been shaped by profound adversity.
Over the course of his life, he experienced psychological crisis, financial collapse, homelessness, and a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Like many people facing overwhelming circumstances, he searched for answers by trying to change what was happening around him, believing that peace would eventually come once life became easier.
Instead, he discovered something far more transformative.
Through his own experiences and later his studies with Eckhart Tolle’s School of Awakening, Joe came to realise that suffering is often sustained not simply by our circumstances, but by our identification with the constant stream of thoughts running through our minds.
That realisation became the foundation of his work.
Today, as a Presence & Life Positioning Guide, public speaker, and author, Joe helps individuals, teams, and organisations move beyond fear, overthinking, and unconscious conditioning by reconnecting with the awareness that exists beneath thought. Through speaking, coaching, podcasts, and writing, he makes the principles of presence practical and accessible, helping people navigate uncertainty with greater clarity, resilience, and emotional freedom.
Throughout the conversation, Joe explores a simple yet powerful message.
We are not our thoughts.
Beneath every fear, every challenge, and every difficult life experience lies an awareness that cannot be broken. By learning to access that deeper presence, people can respond to life’s challenges with greater peace rather than becoming consumed by them.
Inspired by teachers including Eckhart Tolle, Ram Dass, and Robin Sharma, Joe believes awareness is not simply something to understand intellectually, but something to live every day. His mission is to help people stop merely surviving life and begin experiencing it with greater purpose, authenticity, and presence.
Joining The Legacy Bench provides Joe with the opportunity to share his journey while contributing to conversations around wellbeing, resilience, conscious living, and personal transformation. His hope is to encourage others to recognise that no matter what they have experienced, lasting change remains possible.
At the centre of Joe’s work is a simple belief: beneath every thought, every fear, and every challenge lies an awareness that cannot be broken.
His story is a reminder that while we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we relate to it, and sometimes that single shift changes everything.
