From Surviving Trauma to Creating Change: The Story Behind Adnan Jouzaa

In his Legacy Bench conversation, Adnan Jouzaa shares a story shaped by resilience, self-discovery, and a determination to ensure that others receive the support he wishes had been available to him sooner. An Accommodation Support Worker with Manchester City Council, Adnan is not only helping people experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives, he is using his own experiences to drive meaningful change.

Adnan speaks openly about growing up in an unstable and abusive environment, and the lasting impact it had on his mental health, self-esteem, and sense of safety. Like many young people living with chronic stress and trauma, he spent years carrying experiences he did not yet have the language to fully understand.

Those experiences could have defined him.

Instead, they became the foundation for his purpose.

Today, Adnan works directly with individuals experiencing homelessness, helping them become tenancy-ready and supporting their transition into stable housing. Alongside this, he is part of a Manchester City Council leadership programme, where he is developing ideas focused on earlier intervention for people affected by childhood trauma and chronic stress.

At the centre of his journey is a clear mission:
To raise awareness of hidden trauma and ensure that young people receive understanding and support before their struggles become lifelong barriers.

As a Champion for the School of Everyday Democracy, Adnan is passionate about amplifying the voices of those whose experiences are often overlooked. He believes that many young people are navigating significant emotional challenges while still trying to function within systems that fail to recognise what they are carrying.

His work is about creating space for those conversations to happen earlier.

For Adnan, change begins with understanding. By sharing his own story, he hopes to help others recognise that they are not alone, while encouraging organisations and communities to take a more compassionate approach to trauma and wellbeing.

At his core, Adnan represents lived experience turned into action. Someone who has transformed personal adversity into a commitment to helping others find stability, support, and hope.

His story is a reminder that some of the most powerful change comes from those who have lived through the challenges they are working to solve.
