From Breaking Cycles to Writing a New Story: Oliver’s Journey of Healing and Truth
In his Legacy Bench conversation, Oliver Shields opens up with raw honesty about a life shaped by adversity and the conscious decision to change its direction.
At the centre of Oliver’s story is something deeply personal, sharing his family’s struggles, exploring generations impacted by addiction, mental health challenges, and survival. It’s not an easy story to tell but for Oliver, it’s one that needs to be shared.
He speaks openly about the realities he grew up around – addiction affecting multiple members of his family. These weren’t distant stories; they were part of his environment, shaping how he saw the world and, at times, the path he was heading down himself.
And for a while, he admits, he was heading in the same direction. But something shifted.
Oliver reflects on what it means to recognise those patterns before they fully take hold and the strength it takes to step away from them. His journey isn’t about pretending the past didn’t happen; it’s about understanding it, learning from it, and choosing to do things differently.
Now, he finds himself in a completely different chapter of life.
Having recently left the Army, he is preparing to welcome a new baby, while continuing to show up as a father to his 8-year-old daughter and building a life with his wife. It’s a moment of responsibility, growth, and reflection.
Alongside this, he’s channelling his energy into personal development and health, with ambitions to move into the wellness space as a massage therapist, and eventually qualify as a personal trainer, yoga teacher, and NLP practitioner.
His mission is grounded in a powerful but simple belief: don’t let your past define your future. Forgive yourself, do the inner work, and keep moving forward – physically, mentally, and emotionally.
His story is not just about where he’s come from, but about what he’s choosing to become.
And in telling it, he’s not only rewriting his own path, he’s creating space for others to believe they can do the same.
