Meet Alanah — The Disabled Photographer Redefining Creativity, Visibility & Representation in Media

Alanah is a Manchester-based freelance photographer and retoucher whose journey blends artistic excellence with extraordinary resilience. Living with Type 1 diabetes, autism, ADHD, and a limb difference caused by childhood polio, she has built a career that challenges assumptions and redefines what’s possible for disabled creatives in the media industry.

Despite facing physical and social barriers, Alanah has carved out a place among the UK’s emerging creative talents. Her portfolio includes work for major brands such as Sainsbury’s/TU Clothing, Primark, and JD Sports, as well as portrait and editorial shoots for Coronation Street actors, drag artists from Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and cast members from Channel 4’s Love Triangle.

Her talent and eye for storytelling have earned her recognition in some of the industry’s most prestigious publications. Four issues of Vogue have featured her work, while Elle has published three of her images. She also achieved a milestone many photographers dream of — a billboard campaign at Manchester Piccadilly Station, proudly showcasing her creative identity to thousands daily.

But Alanah’s work isn’t just about crafting beautiful images. It’s about breaking open a space in an industry that often overlooks disabled creators. Her mission is rooted in accessibility, representation, and truth.
“Creativity knows no bounds,” she says — and she has made it her mission to remove the barriers that hold many disabled creatives back.

Her inspirations reflect her values.
She draws strength from people like Lila Moss, who openly embraces life with Type 1 diabetes; Rosie Jones, a comedian thriving in a challenging industry while living with cerebral palsy; and Manchester artist Aitch, who uses his platform to raise awareness of Down’s syndrome in honour of his sister.

Alanah’s long-term vision is clear:
She wants to see big brands embrace diversity — both behind and in front of the camera — and she intends to be part of the movement that makes it happen.

When she isn’t shooting or editing, you’ll find Alanah flipping through fashion magazines, experimenting in the kitchen, or listening to rock music — a reminder that her creativity extends well beyond the lens.

Alanah joins Legacy Bench to amplify her story, connect with collaborators, gain direction for her next steps, and inspire others with disabilities to believe that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
